Statement of Intent FINAL

 Introduction

TV Listings Magazine:

-Magazine title: Mega TV

-Slogan: Take a break from reality and jump into fantasy

-UK based

My print coursework will contain a cover page of the villain in my TV crime drama and a Q & A style feature with the writer discussing all the behind the scenes elements, crime drama as a genre and female representation in crime dramas. I will use various behind the scenes photos and images of the stars in order to reflect and help the audience visualise the written feature.

3 minute crime drama extract:

-TV crime drama: Family Lines

-Tag line: Most people would go far to protect the ones that they love, but how far can you go?

-Streaming service/services: Netflix & ITVhub

-Episode 6 (Final episode) in the middle of the episode

Concept/Media Language:

'Family Lines' will centre around a 17 year old Taylor Smith uncovering her mother's mysterious and secretive past and realising her mother isn't who she thought she was as she discovers her mother killed a man.

Locations:

  • Empty garage setting where the murder takes place to convey a more secretive location.

  • Taylor's home; locations range from her bedroom, attic and garden where she discovers her mothers secrets.

Shots:

  • Close ups of the poisonous water to portray significance and mystery to the murder weapon

  • Match on action to portray time passing as James drinks the poisonous water

  • Over the shoulder for when Taylor is discovering clues in order to make the audience feel as though they are discovering the truth at the same time as her

  • Use of enigma codes (Barthes) through shots before the murder scene takes place- builds suspension and anticipation for what's about to happen.

Sound:

  • Diegetic sound- dialogue to communicate narrative and ambient sound e.g poisonous water being poured ready for the victim

  • Non-diegetic sound- tense music playing in the background of my clips as well as at the very end before the extract cuts off Taylor Swift's 'No Body No Crime' is played as the song begins with police sirens which connotes to the audience that a murder has taken place.

Narrative features & genre codes/conventions:

  •  Todorov's equilibrium theory- a disequilibrium is clearly established through the use of the murder scene.

  • Will feature classic crime drama conventions such as the use of low-key lighting, back lighting to create shadows, props such as an evidence board and flashlight.

  • I will communicate what is a flashback in my extract through the use of mise-en-scene (clothing items that would be commonly seen in the 90s such as biker jackets, colourful windbreakers and flared jeans.) Furthermore, during the flashback I will use editing to communicate that this is a recording of the killing that happened in the 90s which Taylor is watching in present time.

Media Representations:

My crime drama extract will:

  • Challenge common crime drama stereotypes of only male characters committing violent acts as in mine both genders commit crimes.

  • Subvert Mulvey's and Butler's theory of the male gaze and gender being seen as a performance as no female character will be sexualised or portrayed as innocent and inferior to men.

  • Subvert Gauntlett's theory of identity becoming more fluid as my male character (James) will be portrayed as aggressive and stubborn.

Media Audiences:

  • Target audience of adults and older youth between the ages of 12-24, due to this any violence or threat in the show will only be implied, no explicit danger will be shown.

  • All genders, races/ethnicities.

  • Aimed at the working class/middle class.

  • Living in the UK.

  • It will borrow conventions from shows like 'Stay Close' and 'Sherlock' to portray a sense of mystery as well as follow similar disequilibrium narratives of a character being killed.

  • Will bring audiences diversion and personal relationships (Blumer & Katz) provided by a narrative filled with enigma codes (Barthes) as well as a teenage protagonist which the target audience can relate to.

  • Young & Rubicam's psychographics:

-Explorers- my crime drama is filled with mystery and adventure following the protagonist

-Mainstreamers- my crime drama follows typical crime drama conventions

-Strugglers- aimed at younger audience therefore may not have a lot of income

Media Industries & Digital Convergence:

  • Able to watch and read my products on any electrical device- the TV crime drama will be available on UK Netflix and ITVX app as I'm targeting a UK based audience.

  • TV listings magazine will follow traditional conventions such as:

-Sans-serif font

-Typical cover lines

-Cover star obscuring the masthead.

-Feature tiktoks that discuss matters of true crime which is a trending topic online of crime dramas increasing in demand.

  • The TV crime drama will be promoted through social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram as they are the 2 most common social media apps used by my targeted demographic age.
