Statement of Intent 2nd draft

My TV crime drama will be called 'Family Lines'. It will appear on Netflix and ITV Hub as Netflix is an extremely popular streaming service among young people and ITV Hub as my crime drama will be set in the UK and ITV is a popular broadcaster and streaming service among the UK audience. My three minute extract will appear in the final episode during the middle of the episode. Overall, my crime drama will focus on Taylor Smith uncovering her mothers mysterious and secretive past and learning more and more about her and realising her mother isn't who she thought she was as she learns her mother killed another human. My TV crime drama plans to meet the brief as it will include more than 2 filming locations  (Taylor's room, an empty garage where the murder scene happens, park setting where Taylor finds the camera (evidence) dug up next to a tree), it will contain identifiable narrative features such as Todorov's equilibrium theory where a disequilibrium will be clearly established and genre codes of a murder mystery as it will feature enigma codeslow-key lighting, back lighting, a cork-board of evidence with post-it notes on it which Taylor uses to try to solve the case of her mother's dark past, a glass of water as this is the way James gets killed due to the water being poisoned by Inez, as well as a photo of Betty that gets shown to James to communicate to the audience that James is also guilty of a crime that he committed and that Inez wants him to remember it before he dies. In addition, it will feature non-diegetic and diegetic sound. The non-diegetic sound will be through foley sound and and the tense music in the background and the diegetic sound will be through the dialogue that Inez and James will have further on in my production. My TV crime drama will feature many zoom in's to portray the updates being made to Taylor's cork-board of evidence as well as when the photo of Betty gets shown to James, medium close-ups and close-ups will also be used in order to portray the characters emotions non-verbally as well as to highlight the importance of things in my crime drama such as the close-ups of the glass of water to portray that the glass of water has a key role in the sequence which is that it is poisonous. I will communicate what is a flashback in my extract through the use of mise-en-scene, in the flashback my characters will be wearing clothing items that would be commonly seen in the 90s such as biker jackets, colourful windbreakers and flared jeans. Furthermore, during the flashback I will use editing to communicate that this is a recording of the killing that happened in the 90s which Taylor is watching in present time. My TV crime drama will challenge stereotypes as it will not only be a male character committing a crime but also a female character who has committed a crime as this representation is usually unlikely in TV crime dramas, however it will still reinforce certain stereotypes such as a man still committing murder by killing a girl and the fact that the male will reinforce stereotypes of an angry, masculine figure who lost to a female. I will also subvert Laura Mulvey's and Judith Butler's theory of the male gaze and gender being seen as a 'performance' as no female character in my production will be sexualised and this time a female character is committing a crime and is violent rather than being portrayed as innocent and inferior to a man. I will also subvert David Gauntlett's theory of Identity becoming more fluid as my male character (James) will still be portrayed as aggressive, stubborn and tough. My target audience is adults and older youth between the ages of 12-24. My TV crime drama will bring audiences the pleasure of diversion  and personal relationships with the protagonist as they are following her on this journey of discovering her mother's dark past filled with secrets. My audience will be able to watch my crime drama on any electrical device (phone, tablet, laptop) on the Netflix app or ITVX app which is only available in the UK as I'm targeting a UK audience only.

My TV listings magazine will be 'Mega Film' which is a quarterly publication magazine covering issues relating to independent film and provides audiences with content such as interviews with directors and cast members. It will follow traditional conventions such as sans-serif font being used, typical cover lines and the cover star obscuring the masthead. It will showcase the technological development of social media by featuring tiktoks that discuss matters of true crime which is a trending topic online and will link with the topic of crime dramas increasing in demand.
