Film regulation and the BBFC

 1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government? This history of the BBFC page may help.

The BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification and their responsibility is to regulate films, videos, websites to make sure they are age appropriate. It's a non-governmental, not for profit and has been classifying films since 1912.

2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.

Films for cinema release are classified by how controversial or extreme the content is which is why more than one team has to view the film to get a range of opinions. The compliance officers watch the films in the BBFC's own cinema, so they can experience the effect that the movie will have on an audience. They note the general theme or context, plot, characters, and outline the key moments too that involve bad language, drug references, sex and violence. They also note the different camera angles and camera shots that are used.

3) Read this BBFC section on landmark decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

The Dark Knight's 12A rating received a lot of press coverage and complaints from members of the public due to the violence in that film who believed that too much violence is unsuitable for that category. I disagree with the 12A rating as I believe children at the age of 12 should not be watching content that involves too much violence, I believe the film should've been a 15.

4) What are the guidelines for a 12A certificate - Blinded By The Light's cinema certificate (it was rated 12 for its home video release)?

The guidelines for a 12A certificate is "Films classified 12A contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult." I think the guidelines for Blinded By The Light were suitable as the film did not contain much graphic content nor any sex scenes therefore it is suitable for that category.

5) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Blinded By The Light and explain why it was given a 12A certificate for cinema release.

Blinded By The Light received a 12A certificate due to moderate bad language it contains as well as the discrimination it features.
