Sound analysis: Blog tasks

 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:

  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects

From the beginning of the scene we can hear diegetic sound of the zombies snarling and the man shouting (dialogue), we then hear the squeak of the door turning and the sound of gun shots. Also from the beginning we can hear non-diegetic sound because of the tense music. We can hear the music building up when the characters get stuck in the revolving door foreshadowing that something is clearly going to happen. All throughout this scene there is a use of a sound bridge as we can hear the sound of the zombies snarling between scene cuts. Shortly after we can hear the diegetic sound of a van honking and loud upbeat music playing which is completely contrapuntal to the situation that is going on in the revolving door possibly done to lighten the mood, but by his dialogue we can see he is trying to lure the zombies away to save his friends that are stuck in the door. When Glenn tries to break the glass of the door and instead is moving the door the music suddenly increases which is parallel to the action going on and creates even more tension as a gap opens in the door therefore the characters are placed in a vulnerable position, creating an enigma code for the audience as to what will happen to the characters.
